week 12

Candy for a cause

By Cassidy Stephens

Aggie Health has implemented a new way at Utah State University to raise money for Shriners Hospitals for Children during the holiday season.

On Wednesday, Aggie Health, a service organization at USU, began their first-ever candy gram fundraiser at the Glen L. Taggart Student Center.

The purpose of candy grams is for students and faculty to purchase soda, suckers, chocolate kisses, Smarties or gum and send the gram to someone of their choice. Each item includes a poetic message and has added decorations to make the gift fun and unique.

After a candy gram is purchased the receiver will be notified through text messaging that they have been given a candy gram.

Chris Glaittli, a candy gram recipient, said he was happy that someone purchased one for him.

“It’s a good cause. It will make your friends happy, you happy and you are doing service,” Glaittli said.

All of the money received will be donated to Shriners Hospitals for Children. The Aggie Health committee members will work with the hospital to decide what specific items are needed.

“One thing we hope to do is to make stockings for kids at the hospital during the holiday season,” said Jessica Annes, a publicity manager for Aggie Health.

Annes had the opportunity to manage the candy gram booth yesterday but said there were not very many people that noticed it.

“I hope the word gets spread,” Annes said. “I feel like it will be really fun and really good.”

However Caleb Carroll, the director for Aggie Health, said he was pleased with how the first day turned out. He said while he was at the booth he sold about 15 grams.

“It’s just a lot of people don’t know about it yet,” Carroll said. “I was very happy for the first day.”

Carroll said he hopes as the weeks continue more people will find out about it. There will be an opportunity to purchase candy grams every Wednesday until the end of the semester from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“Definitely come buy a candy gram. It will make people feel good and it’s for a good cause,” Carroll said.
